Recent confrontation between natural diamonds and lab grown diamonds

Although we have always insisted that natural diamonds and lab grown diamonds can coexist and develop harmoniously, from the perspective of international public opinion, the contradictions between the two camps have intensified with the "guerrilla marketing" of the Natural Diamond Council (NDC) two weeks ago.

In this case, today we will present two completely different views in a fair and non-partisan manner in this article.

The first representative view comes from Hertz Hasenfeld, a Jew, a natural diamond sightholder, who joined the industry in 1976 and is currently the vice chairman of DMIA. (Note: DMIA stands for Diamond Manufacturers & Importers Association of America, that is, "American Diamond Manufacturers and Importers Association")

The Natural Diamond Council recently adopted a brighter, more straightforward tone in its advertising, drawing a clear distinction between natural and synthetic diamonds. (Note: He refused to use "cultivated diamonds" and insisted on using "synthetic diamonds", which is a common attitude of some people)

This shift has caused some controversy within the industry, with critics calling these promotional activities "divisive". In response, DMIA organized a discussion and asked me to explain our position. We respectfully but firmly disagree with both the premise of the criticism and the assumptions behind it.

For years, synthetic diamonds have relied on the afterglow of natural diamonds - exploiting our industry's heritage of romance, authenticity, rarity and emotional significance, but without contributing anything to the value narrative that supports it all.

They have neither established their own category nor invested in an original narrative. Instead, they market themselves as "alternatives", conveniently borrowing the prestige and trust that natural diamonds have earned over generations.
